What appears as your physical body is really your visible mind. As a primarily mental construct it is as elastic and amenable to healing and transformation as your mind.

(This dolphin pose variation is one that Ana Forrest calls Flash Prep. Finding equilibrium between the right and left sides with the asymmetrical shoulders and arms sparks all kinds of new awareness. It also dramatically wakes up the dormant areas in the chest. Super important to practice mindfully otherwise this pose becomes a very bad idea.)

(Lifting legs in downward dog is a common thing in vinyasa flow classes. Because it's repeated many times its so important to do it mindfully. But its considered a no-brainer so it's rarely in the spotlight. One really simple thing you can do that corrects many misalignment habits is to maintain equilibrium between the right and left sides of your body when you lift the leg. Especially notice what happens in your hips, spine, and shoulders and restore balance in those areas and be sure to engage your abdominal muscles.)

Our asana practice teaches us that what feels good is often harmful & what feels uncomfortable is often really good.

(This is one of the most challenging poses for me and brings me face to face with hyper mobility in the lower back. What feels good to me in this pose is harmful and what's good for me is extremely uncomfortable. We really must get to the point where we know the difference. So often we run away from discomfort thinking it's harmful and revert to what feels good not realizing it's harming us.)

If I don't know the truth then how can it make me free?

(Few poses offer the potential for liberation like Hanumanasana. It invites us into a big reality check on what's going on in our bodymind. The variation pictured is one of the ways I invite myself out of habit and into expansion in this pose. Bringing the back hip forward is what most people miss and the mind is so locked into the old pattern that it's challenging to get past it. But the rewards on the other side are too great to pass it up. As Jesus said knowing the truth makes us free. Our part lies in the knowing of it. Truth takes care of the rest. This applies in yoga poses and in life.)

Meditation is spiritual nutrition that restores your soul.

(Adding isometric resistance into yoga posture is really another name for sthira/sukha. In our pigeon pose variations today we worked on drawing the legs in toward each other instead of letting them splay out which creates imbalance on the side of flexibility. Even where the hand is grasping the foot isometric resistance can be applied so muscles are engaged which stabilize the ankle knee and hip joints. While from the outside it looks and even feels like we're not going as deep, we're really going deeper into the fascia layer of tissue. As we move inward with the visible mind (i.e. body) we move deeper into the invisible body (i.e. consciousness).)
