A practice is conscious repetition undertaken to transcend the unconscious repetition of habit.

(Old habits in the body/mind seem to yield slowly in warrior lll. It feels like the hips are neutral even when they're not. This is where we advance into proprioceptive awareness and it can be very uncomfortable. In my experience, there's tremendous resistance to aligning the body beyond its habits in this pose in particular. It takes courage as a teacher to stand for this deeper awareness - not for esthetics,  but for the liberation of students in both body and mind beyond the dullness of unconscious patterning.)

There's no time in presence.

(Doing a pose like standing splits at the wall requires more consciousness which in turn brings us into fuller presence. One of the most beneficial things about incorporating props into the practice of asana is that it lights up the dull places of our body and mind. This prepares the body/mind for the most advanced yoga - meditation. For this one it's a good idea to start with the hands further away from the wall. If your feet are sensitive you can place a towel between your foot and the wall.)

Better to heal the fear than it is to forever avoid what you're afraid of.

(My newly discovered variation of janu sirsasana - head to knee forward bend. You need to use the opppsite arm to position the arm behind the back with fingertips facing upward and heel of the hand pressing down. The lower your hand is on the back, the less intense the stretch. Be sure to square both shoulders forward as you draw the bent elbow in and back. This stretch can be pretty scary and it's not for everyone but it is very potent. )
