The practice of asana, one of yoga's 8 aspects, is a way of slowing things down and becoming mindful so we actually see and feel where a pattern isn't serving us. This is one step towards the ultimate of yoga, samadhi ~ a perfect mind, not a perfect yoga pose. Because the body and mind are one (bodymind), we see thought visibly in the body. This is especially helpful with unconscious patterns (samskaras). Practicing with a mindful teacher who can shed light and gently, patiently guide you beyond habitual patterns is invaluable. This is an ever-expanding practice awakening us to our unlimited, divine nature.

A limiting pattern has to be seen before it can be transcended. Awareness is everything.
